Retro Kart is a free online top-down pixel kart racing game. Pick one of two circuits, race three rival karts over 3 laps, stay on the asphalt — the grass slows you right down — and chase your best lap time. No download, no signup, and it works on any phone or desktop browser.

How a race in Retro Kart works
Everything starts at the track picker. Sunset Oval is wide and flowing — a rhythm circuit where you can stay near full throttle most of the way round. Hairpin Ring squeezes the road into a couple of genuinely tight pinches that punish greedy entry speed. Each button shows your saved best lap for that circuit, so pick the one you are hunting a record on. After the 3-2-1 countdown, steer with ◀/▶ or A/D, hold ▲ or W for throttle, and tap ▼ or S to brake; on a phone, the on-screen steer buttons and the GAS pedal cover the same inputs.
You share the road with three rival karts running at roughly 84%, 90%, and 96% of your machine's top speed. There is no contact between karts — they are pace targets, not battering rams — and your finishing position (P1 to P4) depends on how many of them complete all 3 laps before you do. A lap only registers when you cross the blinking yellow checkpoints in sequence, so cutting across the infield gains nothing. Pause with ⏸, P, or Esc; switching browser tabs pauses the race automatically, and your best lap per track is written to the browser the moment you set it.
Racecraft: where lap time hides
- You cannot steer a parked kart. Turning authority grows with speed until roughly a quarter of top pace, so from a standstill the kart barely rotates. Get rolling first, then fix your heading.
- Grass costs more than braking ever will. Off the asphalt your engine delivers less than half its push while drag roughly triples. A deliberate lift before a corner is always cheaper than a two-wheel excursion through the green.
- The kerbs are road. The red-and-white striped edge pixels still count as asphalt, so use the full width: enter wide, clip the striped inside edge, run out wide again.
- Respect the walls more than the grass. An arena-wall hit bounces your kart and deletes over half your speed while flipping your heading — the single most expensive mistake on either track. If forced to choose, take the grass.
- Brake once, early, in a straight line for Hairpin Ring's pinch. A slow, clean apex beats a fast entry that runs wide every single lap. The fastest rival never leaves the racing line; the only way it beats you is your own scruff.
- Watch the lap banner, not the pack. "BEST LAP!" in gold means the lap you just finished set your record — try to memorize exactly what you did differently and repeat it for three laps straight.
