Snake — Free Online Classic Arcade Game

Snake is the classic arcade game, free online with no download and no signup. Steer with the arrow keys, WASD, a swipe or the D-pad, eat the food to grow, and stay clear of the walls and your own tail. Play solo or hand the phone over for 2-player pass-and-play.

How to Play Snake

The snake never stops moving. You only choose which way it turns, and every piece of food it swallows makes it one segment longer — so the board you have to steer through shrinks with every point you score. Steer with the arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, swipe anywhere on the board on a touch screen, or tap the on-screen D-pad underneath it. Press Space or the pause button to stop the clock; the game also pauses itself if you switch tabs.

The run ends when the head hits a wall or any part of your own body. You cannot reverse into yourself by accident: a 180° input is simply ignored, and turns are queued so a fast left-then-up sequence resolves as two clean turns rather than one lost life. If you would rather have no walls at all, switch Wrap around on before you start and the snake slides off one edge and reappears on the other.

Your best score lives on this device and shows in the header. Beat it and the page throws confetti — that's the whole reward, and it is enough.

Strategies & Tips

Steer with the walls, not the middle

Beginners chase food in straight lines through the centre and end up cutting their own body in half. Strong players hug the edges and treat the middle as a corridor they enter with a planned exit. Every time you cross the middle, know which way you are leaving before you get there.

Follow your tail

The safest shape in Snake is a long coil that trails its own tail, because the square directly behind the tail is always about to become free. When the board gets tight, stop chasing food and start following your tail in a loop until the next piece spawns somewhere reachable.

Never trap the food

Food spawns only on free squares, which means it can appear in a pocket you have sealed with your own body. Before you close a loop, ask whether the space you are cutting off is big enough to escape from — and remember the speed ramps up as you grow, so the decision has to come earlier each time.

Use the queue, not your reflexes

Two inputs are buffered per tick. That means you can tap up then right in one quick motion well before the corner arrives and the snake will execute both in order. Planning turns two moves early is far more reliable than reacting to the grid line as you reach it.

Pause is free

There is no timer and no penalty for pausing. When the snake is long and the next piece of food is in an awkward corner, stop, look at the shape of your body, and pick the route before you resume.

2-Player Pass and Play

Choose 2-Player · pass & play on the start screen and two people can share one phone. Player 1 plays a single life all the way to the end, a pass screen tells you to hand the device over, then Player 2 plays one life with Player 1's score sitting on screen as the target. The higher score wins; matching it is a tie. Names are optional and remembered on this device, and the active player's colour — lime for P1, pink for P2 — carries into the snake itself so nobody loses track of whose run is on screen.

Why a Snake Game on a Fitness App?

Because the food on this board is real food. Every apple, avocado and egg you swallow is one you would otherwise be logging in SnapXFit, and the loop is the same one that makes tracking work: a small action, immediate feedback, a number that goes up. Play a few rounds, then point your camera at an actual plate and let the app do the counting.

FAQ

Is Snake free?

Yes. Snake is completely free to play online with no signup, no ads between rounds and no in-app purchases.

Do I need to download anything?

No download and no install. Snake runs instantly in your web browser on phones, tablets and desktop computers.

Can I play on mobile?

Yes. Swipe anywhere on the board to turn, or use the on-screen D-pad below it. The board resizes to fit your screen and the controls are sized for thumbs.

How do I play Snake?

Steer the snake around the grid and eat the food that appears. Every piece of food you eat adds one segment to your tail and one point to your score. The run ends the moment you hit a wall or bite your own body, so the longer you get the more careful your steering has to be.

What are the controls?

Arrow keys or WASD on a keyboard, a swipe on a touch screen, or the on-screen D-pad. Press Space or the pause button to pause and resume. You cannot turn back on yourself — a 180 degree input is ignored rather than ending the run.

Can two people play on one device?

Yes. Pick 2-Player pass and play on the start screen. Player 1 plays one full life, hands the device over at the pass screen, and Player 2 plays one life with Player 1's score shown as the target. The higher score wins.

What is wrap-around mode?

An optional setting on the start screen. With walls on, touching an edge ends the run. With wrap-around on, the snake leaves one edge and reappears on the opposite side, so only biting yourself can kill you.
