Sliding Puzzle — Free Online 15 Puzzle

The Sliding Puzzle (also known as the 15 Puzzle) is the classic tile-sliding brain teaser, playable free online with no download and no signup. Slide the numbered tiles into order with a tap, click, or the arrow keys — every shuffle is guaranteed solvable.

Pick your challenge: 3×3 for a quick warm-up, the classic 4×4, or the brutal 5×5. It runs right in your browser on mobile and desktop, and tracks your best moves and time for each size. One of the free brain and fitness games from SnapXFit.

How the controls work

The target arrangement never changes: tiles in reading order — 1 in the top-left, counting left to right, row by row — with the gap finishing in the bottom-right corner. What you can vary is how you move. Tapping a tile beside the gap slides it in. Tapping a tile further along the same row or column as the gap shifts the entire run of tiles between them one step, which saves a lot of tapping on bigger boards; note that each displaced tile still counts as its own move on the counter. On a keyboard, the arrow keys (or WASD) steer the empty square itself — pressing left pulls the tile on the gap's left into it. Tiles sitting on their correct square glow lime so you can see your progress at a glance.

The clock only starts on your first move, so studying the scrambled board costs nothing. Moves and time feed separate best records for each of the three board sizes, kept in your browser. Boards are scrambled by replaying hundreds of random legal moves backwards from the solved grid, which is why an unsolvable deal can never appear here — unlike randomly placed tiles, half of which would be impossible.

A reliable solving method

  1. Finish the top row, then abandon it. Place 1, 2, 3 (and 4 on bigger boards) and never disturb them again. Then complete the leftmost column the same way. Each finished edge shrinks a 4×4 into a 3×3, and a 5×5 into a 4×4 — the puzzle collapses toward the bottom-right corner.
  2. Learn the last-two rotation. The final two tiles of any row cannot be placed one at a time. Park the second-to-last tile in the row's corner, tuck the last tile directly beneath it, then rotate both into position in a single sweep. The same trick works sideways when closing out a column.
  3. Think about where the gap travels, not the tile. To push a tile in a chosen direction, the empty square has to orbit around it and come at it from the far side. Once you see the puzzle as steering the gap, the flailing stops.
  4. Keep runs in mind on the 5×5. Long same-row slides reposition three or four tiles in one gesture — great for shuttling the gap across the board quickly while you set up the next placement.
  5. Graduate deliberately. Use the 3×3 to drill the rotation patterns until they are automatic, chase move records on the 4×4, and treat the 5×5 as the planning exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sliding Puzzle free?

Yes. The Sliding Puzzle is completely free to play online at SnapXFit. There is no cost, no signup, and no in-app purchases.

Do I need to download anything?

No download is required. The Sliding Puzzle runs entirely in your web browser — just open the page and start sliding tiles.

Can I play the Sliding Puzzle on mobile?

Yes. The Sliding Puzzle is fully mobile-friendly. Tap a tile next to the empty space on your phone or tablet, or use the arrow keys on desktop.

How do I play the Sliding Puzzle?

Slide the numbered tiles into order from 1 upward, left to right, top to bottom, with the empty space ending in the bottom-right corner. Tap or click a tile next to the empty space to slide it, tap any tile in the same row or column as the gap to slide the whole run, or move the empty space with the arrow keys.

Is every shuffle solvable?

Yes. Every board is shuffled by making hundreds of random legal moves from the solved position, so every puzzle you get is guaranteed to be solvable.

How are moves counted on multi-tile slides?

Sliding a whole row or column run counts one move per tile displaced. Tapping a tile three squares from the gap moves three tiles and adds three to the counter — the long slide is a convenience, not a discount.

What is a good move count for the 4×4?

With perfect play, any solvable 15 Puzzle position can be finished in 80 single-tile moves or fewer. For a human, finishing the 4×4 under 150 moves is solid and under 120 is strong; on the 3×3 aim for under 40.

When does the timer start and stop?

The clock starts on your first move — inspecting the shuffled board is free — and stops the instant the last tile lands. Best moves and best time are saved separately for each board size.

How to Play

Slide the numbered tiles into order — 1 upward, left to right, top to bottom — with the empty space ending in the bottom-right corner.

Tap or click a tile next to the empty space to slide it. Tap any tile in the same row or column as the gap to slide the whole run at once.

On a keyboard, the arrow keys move the empty space.

Pick a board size: 3×3 easy, 4×4 classic, 5×5 hard. Fewest moves and fastest time win — the timer starts on your first move.
