How to Play the Mini Crossword

Tap or click any white square and its whole word lights up, with the matching clue shown in the bar under the grid. Tapping the same square a second time flips you between the Across and Down word running through it — on desktop the spacebar does the same flip. Type letters and the cursor walks itself forward through the word; when you select a clue from the Across or Down lists, the cursor even jumps straight to its first empty square.

On phones the keyboard opens automatically the moment you touch the grid; on desktop just type. Arrow keys step around the board, Backspace erases (and backs up when the current square is already empty), and Tab or Enter hops to the next clue — add Shift to go backwards. The ◀ ▶ buttons beside the clue bar do the same on touch. Feeling unsure? The Check button paints every wrong letter red without revealing anything. The clock starts once you close the how-to card, and each of the puzzles keeps its own best time on your device.

Strategies & Tips

Cash in the gym clues first

These grids are built by a fitness brand and it shows: answers like REP, SET, CALF, TUNA, CHIA and OAT come straight from workout and nutrition vocabulary. If a clue mentions push-ups, protein or the gym, it is usually the easiest entry in the puzzle — start there.

Let crossings do the heavy lifting

In a 5×5 grid nearly every square belongs to two words. Two or three placed letters routinely make a stubborn answer obvious, so instead of staring at a hard clue, fill its neighbours and come back — the word often finishes itself.

Sweep the three-letter answers

Short answers have the fewest possibilities and unlock the most crossings per second. Knock out every three-letter clue on your first pass before touching the five-letter spanners.

Check early, not at the end

Check carries no penalty beyond the running clock. Verifying after each finished corner catches a wrong letter while it has corrupted only one crossing — discovering it at the end means untangling half the grid against the timer.

Type answers straight through

Because the cursor advances automatically inside the selected word, fast solvers never touch the arrow keys mid-answer: read the clue, type all the letters in one burst, then hit Tab to land on the next clue. Save manual navigation for corrections only. The same rhythm works on a phone — keep the keyboard up, let the grid walk itself, and reach for the clue lists only when you want to jump somewhere distant.

Race all five grids

The rotation is random and "New puzzle" always deals a different grid than the one you're on. Because best times are tracked per puzzle, the real endgame is shaving seconds off all five — a solve under two minutes is solid, and under one minute means your fingers found the gym clues before your brain did.
